I have arrived!
I'm now in the collection of one of my all time favorite artists...RICK REINERT! Yesterday, during Day 4 of our 17 days at Piccolo Spoleto (in Charleston, SC), he bought "Like Glass", which was one of my 30 paintings in 30 days' challenge. I'm still struttin' today!

Show Opening - 30 Paintings in 30 Days
For the first time, I'm displaying my paintings which I created during the recent "30 paintings in 30 days" challenge. Ray and I hung the show tonight at Lowcountry Artists Gallery in Charleston, SC. You may read about it HERE.
The reception for my show is this Friday night, May 3, from 5-8pm. Everyone's invited so stop in and see what all the fuss is about!

Observations: 30 paintings in 30 days
I just completed painting 30 paintings in 30 days. What a big personal challenge.
Here are some of my observations throughout this past month.
1. I couldn't have done this without my family respecting my time of exploration and near isolation. Thank you, thank you, thank you!
2. On the first day, I ambitiously started a 12" x 9" painting and completed it in one day (I show you the step-by-step process on Day 1 - Jan 3). However, I quickly realized that particular size was not going to be manageable on a daily basis. I subsequently downsized to 9" x 6" for the next 2 days, and then to 6" x 4" for the next 27 days.
3. I included subject matter that I would never normally reach for. A lime green chair?? Rose petals?
4. I used colors that I don't normally reach for either (e.g. Peacock Blue), along with a paper that I've never painted on (Fabriano 140#). I may incorporate both into my normal routines as a result from now on!
5. I'd wake up early every morning (4 or 5am) and be excited and anxious to tackle that day's painting. I'd go to bed at night, worn out, having quickly planned what I wanted to paint the next day.
6. At Day 7, I thought I'd need to quit! By Day 15, I knew I could do it. On Day 30, I almost ran out of time due to overbooking myself that day but, just under the wire, I did it! The "rules" of the challenge were that we had 24 hrs after the day of the painting to photograph it and post it to the official website for the challenge. (I realized that photographing artwork with a flash at night is not worth it. I'd wait till the early morning sun was out, which allowed me to capture the colors much more easily. I also realized that my knowledge of Photoshop, as little as it is, helped me tremendously to pull this off. I can't imagine having to deal with the technicalities of doing all that without feeling comfortable with some kind of photo editing software.)
7. It took discipline to record my daily adventures in my blog. When I thought I couldn't think or perform anymore that day, I had to spend a few more precious minutes on my posts. (We had to have a blog in order to qualify and participate in the official challenge. We also had to post our prices for our work)
8. I found myself buoyed up by my friends' daily comments on Facebook. You made my every step a little lighter. Thank you!!!
9. I would do this again in a heartbeat, except I'd much prefer it to be a 5 day/week challenge, not 7 days/week. Real life sure does have a way of making itself heard (especially because I missed having my little grands around me as much as I'd like), and it would be nice to have a little leeway in the schedule. Other than that, I recommend it to anyone that's ever entertained the thought of such a challenge.
10. I owe a personal thank you to Leslie Saeta for posting the challenge. Thank you also to the other 220+ artists from around the world that participated in the challenge. Day 30
Mission: 30 paintings in 30 days
Focus: Watercolor with pen and ink on Italian-made Fabriano 140# paper.
Today was a struggle to get the last painting done...all day I wanted to sit down and work on it, yet I had an otherwise full day to deal with. I had been approached to join Lowcountry Artists Gallery in Charleston, and I just hung my work at the gallery! So...it's been a "good" busy, not a "bad" busy day.
Here's the very last piece in the 30 day challenge. Hard to believe it's over. No wonder the months (and years) seem to fly by lately!
"Charleston Embrace II" is reminiscent of our wonderful, quaint streets that never cease to please locals and tourists alike.
Tomorrow I hope to post some of my insights and conclusions about committing to this 30-paintings in 30-days project. Thanks for sticking it out with me!

Day 29
Mission: 30 paintings in 30 days
Focus: Watercolor with pen and ink on Italian-made Fabriano 140# paper.
Another Montreal Farmer's Market offering! I'm a sweet fiend.
My husband laughed at me during our first dinner date...I left "food" on my plate and when he asked me if I wasn't enjoying it, I said "I'm leaving room for dessert!". Since then he's learned that I read the dessert menu first, in order to know what else I'll have room for!
I prefer fruity or lemony desserts to anything chocolate...(as a result, I don't usually have to share with him too often!!!). Please enjoy "The Sweet Lineup".

Day 26

Last summer, some of us Charleston artists were invited to paint plein air in a neighborhood filled with wonderful old homes. My "adopted" home for that day included a covered breezeway where I could rest from the hot Southern sun.

Day 25
Mission: 30 paintings in 30 days

I've painted these wildflowers before (scroll down to the second image...), but today's looks a lot different from my first attempt, doesn't it? That's the fun part about being a painter really. You get to paint what's on your mind TODAY!

Day 24
Mission: 30 paintings in 30 days
Focus: Watercolor with pen and ink on Italian-made Fabriano 140# paper.
Only about a week left in this 30 day challenge. I'm sad.
For this painting, I traveled to Montreal, Quebec...to their JEAN TALON FARMER'S MARKET. What a bevy of activity (can you say that?). Again, I snapped various pictures of this and that. I never intended them to end up in a true, full-sized painting, but recently found myself seeking them out specifically for this smaller painting challenge.
Now, why am I hungry for some wine & cheese all of a sudden!???

Day 23
Mission: 30 paintings in 30 days
Focus: Watercolor with pen and ink on Italian-made Fabriano 140# paper.
I found this little still life setup at a friend's warehouse...he restores furniture and has the neatest piles of stuff you've ever seen...all over that building! I took lots of pictures, thinking "why am I taking these pictures?" I couldn't stop myself. Here it is, about 3 years later, and I was inclined to pull out those old photos to give them another look-see. (FYI...tomorrow I'll rephotograph this painting...had to get it done by this evening in order to meet the challenge's "rules" time-wise but the flash didn't do it any justice.)

Day 21
Mission: 30 paintings in 30 days
Focus: Watercolor with pen and ink on Italian-made Fabriano 140# paper.
"Summertime" was inspired by my Aunt's cake. My aunt lives in Austria, and in Austria they know how to have a good time! It seems to involve a lot of delicious foods that the family prepares together. Often, when the family does get together, they email us photographs of these little delicacies so that we can feel like we're there too!

Day 20
Mission: 30 paintings in 30 days

Day 20...only 10 more days to go in this challenge.
When we started out, I didn't think I could possibly keep up. Midway, I was exhausted.
10 days to go, and I'm sad to think it's almost over.
But, of course, it's not going to ever be over. Always a new challenge around the corner.
Today's scene is from THE BASCOM in HIGHLANDS, NC. If I'm not mistaken, this set of stairs took you up to the gift shop and exhibit area (although I took a little artistic license with the final painting). At The Bascom, creative people come together to learn, teach, and explore what others have to offer. The Highlands/Cashier area offers a nice respite from the heat of the Lowcountry summers too!

Day 19
Mission: 30 paintings in 30 days

The origin of today's paintings is one of Charleston's many, many churches (we're known as THE HOLY CITY). This "EGG AND DART" detail that was carved into the tall doors caught my eye, as did the rusty handle (metal doesn't fare so well in our city by the sea).

I never get tired of my gorgeous, sometimes surreal surroundings! CYPRESS GARDENS beckons often, and it looks so different from season to season. That's water in the foreground, with duckweed on it.

Day 17
Mission: 30 paintings in 30 days
Focus: Watercolor with pen and ink on Italian-made Fabriano 140# paper.
Today I taught an all-day beginner's watercolor class! The students started out a little "scared" of their new adventure with me (totally normal, I assure you), but they were brave souls who quickly bonded with each other and forged ahead! I'm so proud of all of them! They saw me start this painting below,....class was over at 3:30pm and then I headed to the studio to finish painting Day 17's painting.
Today's scene comes to you courtesy of MAGNOLIA PLANTATION & GARDENS again...These yellow flowers appear in the swamp once a year...but I don't remember the time of year....does anyone know?! I think they grow out of the duckweed...yes? I could do more research but I've had to paint, paint, paint to get this posted...no time for research unfortunately (spring time maybe???).

I think they grow out of the duckweed...yes? I could do more research but I've had to paint, paint, paint to get this posted...no time for research unfortunately (spring time maybe???).

Day 16
Mission: 30 paintings in 30 days
Focus: Watercolor with pen and ink on Italian-made Fabriano 140# paper.
ANGEL's TRUMPETS have intrigued me ever since I moved to the South. They seem so other-worldly for some reason. I'd lovingly add them to my garden except for the fact that parts of them (allegedly) are poisonous for pets and children alike! How could something so beautiful be toxic?!
