Class on "Tippettes" to start!

In April 2013, I posted one "tippette" per day (a snippet of a tip) and so many of you reached out to say how much they helped you.  (I'm so glad!)

Starting Jan 7, I'll teach a Wednesday class (5:45pm-7:45pm) for 6 weeks and we'll cover at least 6 of the tippettes.  I'll demonstrate, and you'll grid off a section of paper to practice what I show you.  By the end of the 6 week session, you'll have a real good grasp of how to tackle these subjects in your paintings.

Examples of some subjects we'll cover:
- bricks and stones
- cast shadows
- glass
- fabric
- realism to abstract (almost)
- sunlight through objects

Location:  St. Padre Pio Church, 102 Trolley Road, Summerville, SC  29483 (just south of Stallsville Loop)

Hours:  5:45pm-7:45pm

Skill Level:  Intermediate to Advanced (if you've taken a beginner's class from me, or if you've been painting for a while, you'll benefit from these classes).

Fee:  $120 for all 6 classes.  Single classes are $50 each.
(Note:  Although I usually try to accommodate you, there can be no make-up class if you need to miss one or more of these.)  Class will fill on a first come, first served basis.  Your payment is required in order to hold your spot.

Supply List:  Furnished upon request or at signup.  Anything you already have is probably going to be just fine.

Beginner's Class...Coming Up Soon

I'm in the middle of a 17-day outdoor art festival called Piccolo Spoleto which takes place in downtown historic Charleston, SC (in Marion Square actually).  Have met many new potential students, some of which want to take a beginner's class!  

If you, or someone you know, would like to take a beginner's watercolor class, let me know of your interest so I can include you when I announce it officially.  It'll take place in Summerville, SC (20 miles up the road from Charleston).  I have no details yet but want to hear from you if you'd like updates!

Update on class painting

Initial wash (steps 1 & 2 below) and then the result of the first wash (or sometimes called a "glaze").  I usually always start this way and progress to darker glazes and more detail.  You can't focus just on one section of the painting...you've got to move around and cover the whole page before you know what to do next. 

This is actually a painting I've painted before (about 3-4 yrs ago?) and I'm forcing myself not to look at pictures of the first one.  Normally, if I re-do a scene, I'll want to make it look entirely differently than the first one, but because this is for a class, I want to give the students the experience of learning solid techniques that they can incorporate into their own memory banks...subsequent steps will be reflected in future blog updates.

Watercolor class tonight

Time for our new set of watercolor classes to start tonight!  We're going to focus on subjects such as this photo of a Charleston garden.  We don't want the background to fight the ironwork up close, so we're going to paint it much looser and allow the iron to play the leading role.  I'll post updates on our progress soon.

Special 1-day Watercolor Class - April 1

Last night I decided to offer a special 1-day watercolor class (Thurs., April 1 from 6:30-8:30pm) in my Summerville studio. I have several people that are disappointed because my March classes are already full. Wish I could commit to another full 4 weeks for a 2nd class, but my calendar already is filled with pink this's and blue that's that already have to be fulfilled. This April 1 class is for those of you that have been painting in watercolor for a while and want to either improve your own style, or learn how to think about painting in a more loose, "painterly" style.
